Note that whilst physical sites were used in the movie, a lot of computer generated work was done to alter them so you might be disappointed if you see them in person, and most of the scenes were filmed in a studio.
East Egg vs West Egg, and the houses which inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald based the locations of “East Egg” and “West Egg” on Manhasset/Sands Point and Great Neck/Kings Point on Long Island in his novel.
East Egg is considered “old money” territory for the likes of Tom and Daisy Buchanan, whilst newly rich Jay Gatsby’s home (and the much smaller, neighbouring cottage of narrator Nick Carraway) was in West Egg, ie. the land of the nouveau riche.

In the 2013 film, apparently Baz Luhrmann was inspired by the Georgian architecture of Old Westbury Gardens and Groton Place, both in Westbury, Long Island, for the Buchanan house.
